Zombies, 5k
I get bored very easily. An hour of exercise usually involves a great deal of clock watching. Not because I'm physically tired, but because i get mentally bored. In the 80 and 90s I did endless hours of aerobics, nautilus and step classes and they all bored me. There was an awesome gym called the no frills aerobics factory in cambridge where i would take kickboxing and other asian martial arts classes designed for the fitness enthusiast. This is before the tae bo craze. I loved those classes.
nowadays I work out with a trainer who has a tire, ropes, chains - etc and yes, I realize this sounds bizarre, but I find the hour I spend training there to be mentally stimulating as well as physically demanding.
That being said, how to turn running into something i'll enjoy? Zombies Run of course. If I can convince myself I'm part of something bigger, then working out becomes fun. Like making movies in your head. I always worked out harder if I played a movie in my head of myself doing something intense and adventurous... not climbing a mountain, but rather, trying to evade detection and capture.
Zombies Run is perfect for me. I enjoy the story telling and feeling as if somehow my actions are connected to the story. The voice acting is great.
But I can't run. So... enter Zombies 5K.
Week 1 day 1: I did it on a treadmill. This was annoying because I first had to program the treadmill to do 10 intervals of 60 seconds walking, 15 seconds running pace. Even then it was slightly off. I did the 10 minutes of walking first, then engaged the special program I'd created and I was off by about 5 seconds. I wasn't sure when the clock would start for the intervals.
It didn't matter because there were no chases, and really if there were and I was walking i'd have kicked up the speed on the treadmill and dealt with it... but I hated not being able to get the precision I wanted.
This does not mean you can't use a treadmill. You can... it's just more mental engagement in the process, which takes me out of the enjoyment. I ran about 2-3 minutes at a time during free form run. Walking 2-3 minutes as well.
Week 1 Day 1 - I did it at the high school track. It was a glorious day yesterday. I walked there from my house (1.5 miles) and did the program and walked back. So I got a lot of fitbit steps logged.
This time it was a joy to do the 15 second runs. I then ran 3 minutes, walked 1, ran 3, walked 1, ran 2.
